Drugs, infidelity and rampant egos ensured that New York, New York was a very rotten big apple

New York, New York was supposed to be Liza Minnelli’s triumphant emulation of the great MGM musicals made by her mother, Judy Garland. With a plot partially lifted from A Star is Born, it was filmed at MGM studios. Minnelli even used her mother’s old dressing-room and the original hairdresser from The Wizard of Oz.

This being the 1970s, however, filming was a nightmare of cocaine, egotism and adultery. Minnelli’s father-fixation propelled her into a drug-fuelled affair with her director, Martin Scorsese. He was the creative genius who was going to rescue her from post-Cabaret disappointment. She was his ideal muse, the embodiment of the classic Hollywood movies that he loved.

Back in the real world, Scorsese had the obligatory unfinished script to deal with, and a pregnant wife who was also a “Jekyll and Hyde drunk”. When she wasn’t being sick, Mrs Scorsese (Julia Cameron) prowled the set taking her rejection out on the crew with snotty comments. Scorsese stayed closeted in his trailer with Minnelli having lengthy “script conferences”. Their drug use got worse and worse. Andy Warhol wrote in his diary of the night that Minnelli and Scorsese appeared on the doorstep of the fashion designer Roy Halston, demanding: “Give me every drug you’ve got.”

"People still sit around and tell horror stories about working on New York, New York,” says the film’s costume designer, Theadora Van Runkle, who had her own problems coping with Minnelli’s creeping weight gain. “The crew,” she says, “were treated like peasants.”

Thanks to the interminable delay, the first cut of the film was more than four hours long. It was trimmed by two hours, but did poorly at the box-office, sending Scorsese into an angry depression. Things got worse: his wife divorced him and Minnelli began a torrid affair with the dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. He was put on lithium, and his only distraction was Robert De Niro bugging him to read a book about the boxer Jake LaMotta. Scorsese threw the book aside, saying it was “full of s*** ”. It was another year before Scorsese kicked his drug habit and decided to make Raging Bull.

Heat, also known as Andy Warhol's Heat, is an American film released in 1972. Directed by Paul Morrissey and produced by Andy Warhol, it starred Joe Dallesandro, Sylvia Miles and Andrea Feldman. Joe Dallesandro plays Joey Davis, an unemployed former child star who supports himself as a hustler in Los Angeles. Joey uses sex to get his landlady to reduce his rent, then seduces Sally Todd (Sylvia Miles), a former Hollywood starlet. Sally tries to help Joey revive his career but her status as a mediocre ex-actress proves to be quite useless. Sally's psychotic daughter Jessica (Andrea Feldman) further complicates the relationship between Sally and the cynical, emotionally-numb Joey.

The film was conceived by Warhol as a parody of some sort of Sunset Boulevard.

Nureyev's influence on the world of ballet changed especially the perception of male dancers; in his own productions of the classics the male roles got much more choreography than in earlier productions. The second very important influence was his crossing the borders between classical ballet and modern dance by dancing both, although having been trained as a classical dancer. Today it is absolutely normal for dancers to get training in both styles but Nureyev was the one who started this and it was a sensation and even much criticized in his days.

When AIDS appeared in France in about 1982, Nureyev, like many homosexual men, took little notice. He presumably contracted HIV at some point in the early 1980s. For several years he simply denied that anything was wrong with his health: when, in about 1990, he became undeniably ill, he pretended he had several other ailments. He tried several experimental treatments but they did not stop the inevitable decline of his body. Towards the end of his life, as dancing became more and more agonizing for him, he resigned himself to small non-dancing roles, and dabbled with the idea of becoming a conductor. At the urging of Fonteyn, he had a short but successful conducting career, which was unfortunately cut short due to his declining health.

Eventually, however, he had to face the fact that he was dying. He won back the admiration of many of his detractors by his courage during this period. The loss of his looks pained him, but he continued to struggle through public appearances. At his last appearance, at a 1992 production of La Bayadère at the Palais Garnier, Nureyev received an emotional standing ovation from the audience. The French Culture Minister, Jack Lang, presented him with France's highest cultural award, the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres. He died in Paris, France, a few months later, aged 54. His grave, at Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois near Paris, is featured in this photograph with an oriental Turkic-style carpet.

Nyro died of ovarian cancer in Danbury, Connecticut on April 8 1997 at the age of 49. The same disease had claimed the life of her mother, Gilda Mirsky Nigro, also 49 at the time of her death.

Her life partner was Maria Desiderio (d. 1999). She is survived by her son Gil Bianchini, her father Louis Nigro, and her brother Jan Nigro.

In 1952, the Hugo Gallery in New York presented a show of Warhol’s illustrations for Truman Capote’s writings.
When Other Voices, Other Rooms was published in 1948, it stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for nine weeks, selling more than 26,000 copies. The promotion and controversy surrounding this novel catapulted Capote to fame. A 1947 Harold Halma photograph, used to promote the book, showed a reclining Capote gazing into the camera. Gerald Clarke, in Capote: A Biography (1988), wrote, "The famous photograph: Harold Halma's picture on the dustjacket of Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948) caused as much comment and controversy as the prose inside. Truman claimed that the camera had caught him off guard, but in fact he had posed himself and was responsible for both the picture and the publicity." Much of the early attention to Capote centered around different interpretations of this photograph, which was viewed as a suggestive pose by some. According to Clarke, the photo created an "uproar" and gave Capote "not only the literary, but also the public personality he had always wanted." The photo made a huge impression on the 20-year-old Andy Warhol, who often talked about the picture and wrote fan letters to Capote. When Warhol moved to New York in 1949, he made numerous attempts to meet Capote, and Warhol's fascination with the author led to his first New York one-man show, Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote at the Hugo Gallery (June 16 - July 3, 1952.).

When people gave Louis Malle credit for making a star of Jeanne Moreau in Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (1958) immediately followed by Amants, Les (1958), he would point out that Moreau by that time had already been "recognized as the prime stage actress of her generation." She had made it to the Comédie Française in her 20s. She had appeared in B-movie thrillers with Jean Gabin and Ascenseur was in that genre. The technicians at the film lab went to the producer after seeing the first week of dailies for Ascenseur and said: "You must not let Malle destroy Jeanne Moreau". Malle explained: "She was lit only by the windows of the Champs Elysées. That had never been done. Cameramen would have forced her to wear a lot of make-up and they would put a lot of light on her, because, supposedly, her face was not photogenic". This lack of artifice revealed Moreau's "essential qualities: she could be almost ugly and then ten seconds later she would turn her face and would be incredibly attractive. But she would be herself".

Moreau has told interviewers that the characters she played were not her.

Judy Huddleston also recalls her relationship with Morrison in Living and Dying with Jim Morrison. During September 1970 Joplin and her band began recording a new album in Los Angeles with renowned producer Paul A. Rothchild, who was famous for his work with The Doors. Although Joplin died before all the tracks were fully completed, there was still enough usable material in the can to compile an LP. "Mercedes Benz" was included despite it being a "first take", and the track "Buried Alive In The Blues" -- to which Joplin had been scheduled to add her vocals on the day she was found dead -- was kept as an instrumental.

The result was the posthumously released Pearl (1971). It became the biggest selling album of her short career and featured her biggest hit single, the definitive version of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee", as well as the wry social commentary of the a cappella "Mercedes Benz", written by Joplin and beat poet Michael McClure. In 2003, Pearl was ranked #122 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Among her last public appearances were two broadcasts of The Dick Cavett Show on June 25 and August 3, 1970. On the June 25 show she announced that she would attend her ten-year high school class reunion, although she admitted that when in high school, her schoolmates "laughed me out of class, out of town and out of the state, man". She made it there, but it would be one of the last decisions of her life and it reportedly proved to be a rather unhappy experience for her.[citation needed]

Lucy's MGM career looked rosy indeed when she was immediatley cast in a big, splashy Arthur Freed musical, Du Barry Was a Lady, with Red Skelton. The movie went well, and Lucy was quickly cast in another big musical, Thousands Cheer. This movie also went well, but Freed was busy with the studio's biggest comodity, Judy Garland, and Lucy fell by the way side. When she did make films, they were either big, elaborate MGM all-star revues (Thousands Cheer, Ziegfeld Follies), supporting roles in star-based films (Without Love, Abbott and Costello in Hollywood) or bland muscials (Meet the People -- her only film in 1944). So, Lucy got out of her MGM contract, and began free-lancing until 1948, when she got a role in My Favorite Husband -- a CBS radio show about a bank executive (Richard Denning) and his wacky wife (Lucy). In 1950, CBS wanted to move to television as is, but after a long fight, Lucy got them to allow her bongo-playing husband, Desi Arnaz, to co-star. And the rest, as they say, is history (and I Love Lucy).

Russell Craig Eadie (January 10, 1948 – October 30, 1990), known by his stage name of Craig Russell, was a Canadian female impersonator.

His impersonations included Carol Channing, Bette Davis, Mae West, Barbra Streisand, Tallulah Bankhead, Marlene Dietrich, Bette Midler, Anita Bryant, Peggy Lee and Judy Garland. While performing, he always spoke and sang in the voices of the celebrities he was impersonating.

As a teenager, Russell became president of Mae West's fan club, and briefly worked and lived in Los Angeles as West's secretary. He eventually returned to Toronto, where he moved in with Margaret Gibson and worked as a hairdresser while pursuing his career as a stage performer. By 1971, he was a regular performer in Toronto gay clubs and had a burgeoning international following.

Russell fathered one child, a daughter, Susan Allison ("Allison"), who was born January 6, 1973 in Toronto. Father and daughter developed a relationship in the years prior to his death.

In 1977, Russell starred in the film Outrageous!, based on a short story written by Gibson about their time as roommates.

Although he publicly identified as gay rather than bisexual, Russell married his close friend Lori Jenkins in 1982.

In 1987, Russell starred in the sequel to Outrageous!, appropriately titled Too Outrageous!

Russell remained married to Lori until his death in 1990 of a stroke related to complications from AIDS.

Craig was cremated and laid to rest in Port Perry, Ontario.

Sylvester James was born in Los Angeles, California. Living in San Francisco in the 1960s, he performed in a musical production called Women of the Blues, then joined a short-lived group of transvestite performance artists called The Cockettes in the early 1970s. (Famed transvestite Divine was a member of the group as well.) Sylvester can be seen in the Cockettes' outrageous short film "Tricia's Wedding", lampooning the wedding of President Nixon's daughter Tricia, and in an eponymous 2002 documentary about the group.

In 1972, Sylvester supplied two cuts to Lights Out San Francisco, an album compiled by the KSAN radio station and released on the Blue Thumb label. In 1973, Sylvester & his Hot Band released two rock-oriented albums on Blue Thumb (their self-titled debut was also known as "Scratch My Flower," due to a gardenia-shaped scratch-and-sniff sticker adhered to the cover). Signed a solo act to Fantasy Records in 1977, and working with the production talents of legendary Motown producer Harvey Fuqua. Sylvester later alleged that Fuqua cheated him out of millions of dollars.

Sylvester soon met his frequent collaborator Patrick Cowley. Cowley's synthesizer and Sylvester's voice proved to be a magical combination, and pushed Sylvester's sound in an increasingly dance-oriented direction; his second solo album, Step II (1978), unleashed two disco classics: "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)," and "Dance (Disco Heat)." By this time both his live shows and recordings also recognizably featured the back-up vocals of Two Tons O' Fun: future Weather Girls Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes. 1979 brought three Billboard awards and an appearance in the movie, The Rose, starring Bette Midler.

Moving to Megatone Records in 1982, Sylvester quickly landed a Hi-NRG classic with "Do You Wanna Funk." He was close friends with other Megatone artists Linda Imperial and Jeanie Tracy. Sylvester was also very close to the legendary Patti LaBelle.

Sylvester died of complications from AIDS in San Francisco on December 16, 1988. He was 40 years old. His good friend Jeanie Tracy took care of Sylvester during his last days.

touch with the real Drew Stephens (Karen Silkwood's boyfriend) to find out
more about the real Karen Silkwood, that died in 1974 at age 28. Stephens
